زبان اسپانیایی یا کاستیلی زبانی از خانوادهٔ زبان‌های رومی و یکی از پُرگویش‌وَرترین زبان‌های جهان است. زبان اسپانیایی به لحاظ تکلم به عنوان زبان مادری رتبه دوم[۱] و مجموع افرادی که به این زبان سخن می‌گویند رتبه سوم را در جهان دارد.[۲]

در سال ۱۹۹۹، اسپانیایی زبان مادری ۳۵۸ میلیون نفر و مجموعاً ۴۱۷ میلیون سخنور بوده‌است.[۳] در حال حاضر این ارقام به ۴۰۰ [۴][۵] و ۵۰۰[۶] میلیون نفر افزایش یافته‌اند. در ایالات متحده حدود ۱۶ درصد جمعیت به زبان اسپانیایی تکلم می‌کنند، زبان اسپانیایی زبان دوم در ایالات متحده امریکا است.

تاریخچه [ویرایش]

زبان اسپانیایی کاستیلی در اواخر قرن سوم پیش از میلاد توسط رومی‌ها وارد شبه جزیره ایبری شد. و پس از مدتی بیشتر زبان‌های بومی آن منطقه مانند باسکی را کنار زد. این زبان از گروه رومی زبانهای ایتالیک یا لاتین می‌باشد و از اسپانیا و از طریق سیاست‌های استعماری پادشاهی اسپانیا در قرون وسطی و مناطق تحت سلطهٔ اسپانیا مانند امریکای لاتین و برخی نقاط قاره افریقا و آسیا کشیده شد. نخستین رمان شناخته شده در جهان را دن کیشوت می‌دانند که اثر یک اسپانیایی بنام سروانتس در قرون وسطی می‌باشد. این زبان مدت‌ها تحت فشار زبان عربی بسر می‌برد و واژگان بیشماری را از زبان عربی پذیرفته است[۷].
