زندگینامه
دوران کودکی و اوایل زندگی
فرانسیس اسکات کی فیتزجرالد در ۲۴ سپتامبر ۱۸۹۶ در خانوادهای کاتولیک از طبقهٔ متوسط جامعه، در سینت پال به دنیا آمد.[۱] پدرش، ادوارد فیتزجرالد[a] از نسلی با تبار ایرلندی و انگلیسی بود.[۲] ریشهٔ اجدادیِ مادریِ ادوارد به خانوادهٔ اسکات کی میرسد که از اولین خانوادههای ساکن در مریلند بودند.[۱] نام کوچک فیتزجرالد نیز برگرفته از یکی از اعضای این خاندان، فرانسیس اسکات کی است که سرود ملی آمریکا، «پرچم پرستاره» را نوشت.[الف][۴] مادرش ماری «مولی» مککویلان[b] نام داشت؛ دختر مهاجری ایرلندی به نام فیلیپ اف. مککویلان[c] که از راه گسترش خواربارفروشی خود توانست ثروتمند شود.[۵][۱] ادوارد فیتزجرالد پس از جنگ داخلی آمریکا، از مریلند به مینهسوتا نقلمکان کرد تا تجارت ساخت مبلمان حصیری را آغاز کند.[۶]
یک سال پس از تولد فیتزجرالد، تجارت مبلمان حصیری پدرش شکست خورد و اعضای خانواده به بوفالو نقلمکان کردند تا پدر بهعنوان فروشنده به پروکتر اند گمبل بپیوندد.[۷] فیتزجرالد بیشترِ دههٔ اولِ زندگیاش را در بوفالو و نیز میاندورهای مختصر را که از ژانویهٔ ۱۹۰۱ تا سپتامبر ۱۹۰۳ است، در سیراکیوس گذراند.[۸] والدینش او را به دو مدرسهٔ کاتولیک در وست ساید بوفالو فرستادند؛ نخست هالی آنجلز کانونت[d] (۱۹۰۳–۱۹۰۴) و سپس آکادمی ناردین[e] (۱۹۰۵–۱۹۰۸).[۹] همسالانش فیتزجرالد را در دوران کودکی، بهعنوان پسری با هوش غیرمعمول و مشتاق ادبیات توصیف کردند.[۱۰]
پروکتر اند گمبل پدرش را در مارس ۱۹۰۸ اخراج کرد و خانواده به سینت پال بازگشت.[۱۱] اگرچه پدر الکلیاش تهیدست شده بود اما ارثیهٔ مادرش کمک خرج خانواده بود تا بتوانند در همان وضعیت متوسط زندگی کنند.[۱۲] فیتزجرالد از سال ۱۹۰۸ تا ۱۹۱۱ در آکادمی سینت پال[f] تحصیل کرد.[۱۳] فیتزجرالد در سیزده سالگی اولین اثر داستانی خود را در روزنامهٔ مدرسه منتشر کرد.[۱۴] در سال ۱۹۱۱، والدین فیتزجرالد او را به مدرسهٔ پیشدانشگاهی کاتولیکی نیومن در هکنساک فرستادند.[۱۵] در نیومن، پدر سیگورنی فی[g] به تواناییهای ادبیاش پی برد و او را تشویق کرد تا نویسنده شود.[۱۶]
پرینستون و جینورا کینگ
فیتزجرالد پس از فارغالتحصیلی از نیومن در سال ۱۹۱۳، در دانشگاه پرینستون ثبتنام کرد و یکی از معدود کاتولیکهای جامعهٔ دانشجویی شد.[۱۷] او با گذشت نیمسالهای تحصیلی، با همکلاسیهایش ادموند ویلسون[h] و جان پیل بیشاپ[i] دوستیِ نزدیکی را شکل داد که هر دوی آنها بعدها به حرفهٔ ادبیاش کمک کردند.[۱۸] فیتزجرالد که مصمم بود تا نویسندهای موفق شود، داستانها و شعرهایی را برای پرینستون تراینگل کلاب،[j] پرینستون تایگر[k] و ناسائو لیت[l] نوشت.[۱۹]
فیتزجرالد در طی سال دوم دانشگاه[m] و وقفۀ تعطیلات کریسمس به سینت پال بازگشت؛ در آنجا جینورا کینگ،[n] نووارد[o] ۱۶ سالۀ شیکاگویی را دید و عاشق او شد.[۲۰] آن دو رابطۀ عاشقانهای را آغاز کردند که برای چند سال ادامه داشت.[۲۱] او به الگویی ادبی برای ایزابل بورگه[p] در اینسوی بهشت، دیزی بیوکنن[q] در گتسبی بزرگ و بسیاری دیگر از شخصیتهای داستانی فیتزجرالد تبدیل شد.[۲۲][۲۳] زمانی که فیتزجرالد دانشجوی پرینستون بود، جینورا در مدرسۀ ویژه دختران وستوور،[r] در نزدیکی کنتیکت تحصیل میکرد.[۲۴] او تا زمانی که جینورا را بهدلیل لاسزنی با انبوهی از ستایندگان جوان از پنجرۀ خوابگاهش اخراج کردند، در وستوور با او دیدار میکرد.[۲۵] بازگشت او به خانه، به معاشقههای هفتگی فیتزجرالد پایان داد.[۲۵]
علیرغم فاصلۀ بسیاری که بین آن دو شکل گرفته بود، فیتزجرالد همچنان به او علاقهمند بود و از اینسر به آنسر کشور سفر کرد تا خانوادۀ کینگ را در عمارت خانوادگیشان در لیک فارست ملاقات کند.[۲۶] اگرچه جینورا عاشق او بود[۲۷] اما خانوادۀ طراز اول کینگ اظهار عشق اسکات را بهدلیل وضعیت اجتماعی او و مقایسهاش با سایر خواستگاران پولدار تحقیر کردند.[۲۸] ظاهراً چارلز گارفیلد کینگ،[s] پدر مستبد جینورا به فیتزجرالد جوان گفت: «پسران فقیر نباید به فکر ازدواج با دختران پولدار باشند.»[۲۹][۳۰]
فیتزجرالدِ آمادۀ خودکشی که جینورا او را بهعنوان شریک زندگی نامناسب نپذیرفت، در بحبوحۀ جنگ جهانی اول برای نیروی زمینی ایالات متحده داوطلب خدمت شد و بهعنوان ستوان دوم[t] مأموریت یافت.[۳۱][۳۲] در حالی که در انتظار برای اعزام به جبهۀ غربی، جایی که امید داشت تا در پیکار بمیرد،[۳۲] در اردوگاه آموزشی واقع در فورت لونوورت مستقر شد که فرماندهی آن را دوایت آیزنهاور، ژنرال و رئیسجمهوری آیندۀ ایالات متحده بر عهده داشت.[۳۳] فیتزجرالد ظاهراً تحت اختیار آیزنهاور آزرده و بهشدت از او متنفر بود.[۳۴] فیتزجرالد با امید به انتشار رمانی تا پیش از مرگ مورد انتظارش در اروپا، دستنوشتهای ۱۲۰ هزار کلمهای را در مدت سه ماه نوشت که خودپرستهای رمانتیک[u] نام داشت.[۳۵] هنگامی که او دستنوشته را برای ناشران فرستاد، اسکریبنرز آن را رد کرد.[۳۶] با این حال، این اثر مورد توجه مکسول پرکینز، نقاد قرار گرفت که نوشتههای فیتزجرالد را تحسین و او را تشویق کرد تا پس از بازبینیهای بیشتر، دوباره آن را بفرستد.[۳۵]
فیتزجرالد سال ۱۹۳۷ پس از بستن قراردادی با کمپانی رسانهای «مترو گلدوین مایر» به لسآنجلس مهاجرت کرد. وقتی فیتزجرالد داستان کوتاه «دمای هوا» را در سال ۱۹۳۸ نوشت در مجله «اسکوایر» فیلمنامه و داستانکوتاه مینوشت و روی رمان تمامنشدهاش به نام «عشق آخرین تایکون» کار میکرد.
داستان کوتاه دمای هوا دربارهٔ «اِمِت مونسن»، نویسنده ۳۱ ساله الکلی است که به بیماری قلبی دچار است و داستان در لسآنجلس اتفاق میافتد. براساس توصیفی که خبرگزاری آسوشیتدپرس از این داستان دارد، مونسن «بسیار خوشعکس» است، «لاغر و زیبایی مرموزانه» دارد و داستان بهطور واضح سینمایی است.
اسکات فیتزجرالد ۲۱ دسامبر ۱۹۴۰ درگذشت و روزنامه نیویورکتایمز در خبر درگذشت او نوشت: «آینده حرفهای درخشان او آنطور که باید هیچوقت تحقق نیافت.»
فرانسیس اسکات فیتز جرالد یکی از بهترین داستان نویسان قرن بیستم به حساب میآید. متن داستانهایش همواره، عاری از هرگونه پیچیدگی ادبی است. او در عصر جاز در ۲۴ سپتامبر سال ۱۸۹۶ در سنت پل مینه سوتا متولد شد. در زمان تولد او آمریکا به شهری با تکنولوژی پیشرفته تبدیل شده بود که روز به روز به تعداد شرکتهای بزرگ آن افزوده میشد. خانوادهٔ او از نژاد ایرلندی-آمریکایی بودند که در مری لند اقامت داشتند. فیتز جرالد در سن ۱۵ سالگی به آکادمی نیومن هکنساک نیوجرسی فرستاده شد. در سال ۱۹۱۳ در دانشگاه پرینستون پذیرفته شد. در آن زمان آمریکا در جنگ جهانی شرکت داشت. در دانشگاه پرینستون با ادوارد ویلسون آشنا شد و دوستی عمیقی بینشان شکل گرفت. اهل غرب بود، فقیر نبود اما وضعیت اجتماعی خیلی بالایی نداشت.
فیتز جرالد رمانهای خود را به چاپ رساند. در سال ۱۹۲۵ معروفترین رمان او نام گتسبی بزرگ به چاپ رسید. یکی از مجموعهٔ آثار او، داستانهای کوتاه اوست. در زمان حیات او داستانهایش مورد توجه قرار نگرفت و همسرش زلدا به بیماری روحی مبتلا شد. مجموعهٔ داستانهای کوتاه او شامل ۵۴ داستان کوتاه است که در این مقاله یکی از داستانهای کوتاه او به نام رویاهای زمستان درسال ۱۹۲۲ به چاپ رسیدهاست و در ذیل سعی شدهاست این اثر به درستی به فارسی ترجمه شود.
