تاریخچه هوش مصنوعی از دوران باستان با افسانه ها، داستانها و شایعاتی در مورد موجوداتی مصنوعی دارای هوش یا آگاهی که به وسیله استاد سازنده به آنها بخشیده است، آغاز می گردد. پاملا مک کورداک ، نویسنده انگلیسی در این باره چنین می نویسد که هوش مصنوعی "با آرزویی کهن برای جعل خدایان" آغاز شد.[۱]
دانه های هوش مصنوعی مدرن توسط فیلسوفان کلاسیک کاشته شد که تلاش می کردند تا فرایند اندیشیدن انسان را با دستکاری مکانیکی سمبولها توصیف کنند. این کار با اختراع رایانه های دیجیتال قابل برنامه ریزی در دهه ۱۹۴۰ به اوج خود رسید، یعنی ماشینی که بر پایه ماهیت انتزاعی استدلال ریاضی ساخته شده بود. این وسیله و ایده های پشت آن تنی چند از دانشمندان را بر آن داشت تا به صورت جدی امکان ساخت یک مغز الکترونیکی را به بحث بگذارند.
شاخه پژوهش در زمینه هوش مصنوعی در کنفرانسی در کالج دارتموث در تابستان ۱۹۵۶ پایه ریزی شد. کسانی که در آن شرکت کردند تا چندین دهه پیشروان پژوهش در زمینه هوش مصنوعی بودند. بسیاری از آنان پیش بینی می نمودند که ماشینی به هوشمندی انسان در زمانی به اندازه یک نسل یا کمتر پا به عرصه وجود خواهند نهاد و بودجه هایی میلیون دلاری به آنها داده شد تا این چشم انداز را تحقق بخشند. سرانجام روشن گردید که آنها دشواری این پروژه را دست کم گرفته بودند. در سال ۱۹۷۳ در پاسخ به انتقادات سر جیمز لایت هیل وفشار مداوم کنگره، دولتهای بریتانیا و ایالات متحده تخصیص بودجه برای پژوهش های هدایت نشده در زمینه هوش مصنوعی را متوقف نمودند.هفت سال بعد ابتکار آینده نگری دولت ژاپن بسیاری از دولتها را بر آن داشت تا میلیاردها دلار برای هوش مصنوعی هزینه کنند اما در اواخر دهه ۸۰ سرمایه گذاران از خواب برخاستند و سرمایه گذاریها را دوباره متوقف نمودند. این چرخه رونق و کساد زمستانها و تابستانهای هوش مصنوعی همچنان با این شاخه همراه است. حتی اکنون نیز کسانی هستند که هنوز آتش تندی دارند و پیش بینی های فرا واقعی می کنند. پیشرفت هوش مصنوعی با وجود فراز و نشیب آوازه اش در چشم دیوان سالاران دولتی و سرمایه گذاران مخاطره پذیر، ادامه یافت. مسائلی که در سال ۱۹۷۰ امکان ناپذیر می نمودند، حل شده اند و امروزه در محصولات موفق تجاری به کار می روند. هرچند که برخلاف پیش بینی های خوش بینانه پژوهشگران نسل اول هوش مصنوعی، هنوز هیچ ماشینی با هوشی همپایه هوش انسان ساخته نشده است. آلن تورینگ در مقاله پر آوازه اش در سال ۱۹۵۰ که سبب شتاب گرفتن پویش های مدرن برای ماشنهای خردمند شد، چنین می گوید که "ما تنها فاصله کوتاهی را در پیش روی خود می بینیم" و می افزاید که "اما کار بسیاری باید انچام شود."(Turing 1950، ص. 460)</ref>

(مک کورداک ۲۰۰۴) چنین می نویسد: "هوش مصنوعی در اشکال گوناگونش اندیشه ای است که تاریخ تفکر غرب را فراگرفته است، رویایی با نیاز مبرم به تحقق یافتن، که در اساطیر،افسانه ها، داستانها، پندارها و ماشینهای خودکار کوکی جلوه نموده است.[۳]
هوش مصنوعی در افسانه، داستان تخیلی و پندار
انسانهای مکانیکی و موجودات مصنوعی در اساطیر یونانی حضور دارند. برای نمونه می توان از رباتهای طلایی هفائستوس ویا گالائتای پوگمالیون نام برد.[۴] در قرون وسطا شایعاتی در مورد افزودن ذهن به ماده به وسیله کیمیاگری و روشهای مرموز و رازآلود بر سر زبانها بود؛مانند تکوین جابر بن حیان، هومونکولوس (کوتوله یک شکل) پاراسلسوس و یا گولم (آدم مصنوعی) ربی جوداه لئو.[۵]
