WEIGHING MERCHANDISE IN A CARAVANSARY, TEHERAN. tions of Persia. Public baths abound atTeheran, and every one visits them atleast once a week; many do it daily. Thewealthy have private baths attached totheir houses, which are sometimes elegantand luxurious. Christians are never per-mitted to enter the public baths of Persia—a point in which the Peisians are far morefanatical than the Turks. But I am ableto judge,from several private baths I haveentered, what are the arrangements andVol. LXXIL—No. 428.—16 are undoubtedly thus communicated. Not-withstanding this fact, these public bathsare in the main useful and indispensableinstitutions in such a climate. After completing his bath, the Persiantraveller goes to the bazars, to transactthe business which brought him to Tehe-ran. WATER-CARRIER. elegantly decorated with the beautifulhoney-comb work called Saracenic, al-though in reality Persian in its origin.Each trade or fabric has certain streetsallotted, the dealers in carpets and em-broideries in one street, the shoe-makersin another, the workers in brass in an-other, the cotton beaters and weavers instill another street, and so on. In eachavenue, however, are found confectioneryor bakers shops or eating shops, whereone gets kebabs, ragouts, and the variousnative dishes of rice, classified under thegeneral heads of chillo and pillo. Allthe shops are open to the street like booths,the buyer standing outside, liable to bejostled or run over by the ever-shifting,bustling, confused throng of pedestrians,and riders, porters, horses, and loadedmules. Of course business is not confined tothe bazars or covered market. Grocers,hucksters, butchers, carpenters, or black-smiths are found in every quarter.
