«زبان گویشی با ارتش و نیروی دریایی است» یک کلام قصار دربارهٔ ماهیت متعارف تمایز مسان یک گویش و یک زبان است.[۱][۲][۳][۴] این عبارت تأثیر شرایط اجتماعی و سیاسی بر درک جامعه از وضعیت زبان یا گویش را نشان میدهد.[۵] این سخن را زبانشناس اجتماعی و پژوهشگر ییدیش ماکس واینریش رواج داد. او در یکی از سخنرانیهای خود آن را از زبان یکی از حضار شنیده بود.
واینریش
این جمله را معمولاً به ماکس واینریش، زبانشناس ییدیش نسبت میدهند که آن را این گونه به زبان ییدیش بیان میکند:
