Text Appearing Before Image: />,,/ Text Appearing After Image: BALUCHITHERIIM. A gigantic fossil mammal 34 feet in length, probably related to the rhinoceros theless, primitive birds originated fromlight-boned pre-dinosaurs of a far earlierepoch (Triassic). Some examples offossil birds are shown in the furtherright hand corner of the hall, includingthe giant long-legged Diatryma with itspowerful beak, and the ancient swim-ming water bird, Hesperornis. In a neigh-boring case are casts of the famousArchccopteryx. This creature was actuallytransitional between reptiles and birds,having the skeletal characteristics, clawedfore-limb, and tapering tail of the formerand the beak-shaped jaws and featheredcovering of the latter. On the wall oppo-site are fossils and drawings of the greatflying reptile, Pteranodon. A huge thinfold of skin extending from the elongatedfifth finger to the outer edge of the feetenabled it to flit through the air like abat.
