Artist's description: "The 1975 NASA Ames/Stanford University Summer Study worked out the broad engineering requirements for a toroidal shaped space colony design. This painting used the design, but I refused to fill the interior with the 'shopping mall gone mad' clutter of other drawings. Again the challenge of sustaining something like a closed ecosystem was a theme I wanted to emphasize. This design became known as the 'Stanford Torus'. Oil on board for NASA Ames."

The space colony painting was first drawn out in perspective trying several variations. The one I thought worked best was refined at the full size of the final work, about 20 X 30 inches, on a sheet of tracing paper, the paper taped to the heavy paper illustration board the painting was to go on then the lines were retraced with a ballpoint pen. The back of the drawing had been covered with soft graphite pencil. This was then varnished and the painting done over a week or two using oil paints.
